Internet News   Internet News : Commodore Amiga Mini Pre Order Has Begun
posted by damocles on 21-Mar-2012 4:52:07 (44409 reads)
After 20 years since the last Commodore Amiga was released, the first new Commodore Amiga will be released by mid May, and this time in a Mini case. It comes with two options, barebones and fully loaded with i7 2600K [3.5GHz Quadcore] + nVidia 430 (with it's own discreet 1GB of RAM).

Full details can be found at CommodoreUSA.

It's no longer a Windows world unless you have specialized needs. I don't see having the option to be able to run Windows as a advantage. Using only Windows in todays fast paced world is a disadvantage actually .

Oh, are you claiming they didnt buy rights to the Amiga name? What is this another existing and active product line anyway?

Whatever the old Commodore would have done with the Amiga certainly wouldn't have been x86.

Sorry, but that's nonsense.

Dave Haynie was already envisioning a PC-like, modular architecture for nextgen Amigas. 20 years ago.

http://www.thule.no/haynie/research/acutiatr/docs/acu1.pdf

Most of all, it wasn't necessarily tied to a specific CPU family/architecture. A very wise move, if you ask me.

Nobody can tell for sure that they wouldn't have chosen a x86-family CPU. Maybe, or maybe not. We won't ever know, unfortunately, but I don't really think you can state that as a certain fact.

I think at that time they chose PA-RISC. But the whole system was planned modular so you can replace components including the processor (a little similar like the PCs). So perhaps there would have been X86 and the newest AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA Chipset . Who knows... Or they had supported different hardware-platforms today...

Commodore was gearing up for PA-RISC to replace 68K

That was supposed to happen in the 94-95 timeframe, minus the bankruptcy. Even so, I believe, by the late 90s they would probably switch to x86. Even Apple began planning to do so in late 90s(source Steve Jobs' biography), and they had a much bigger stake in PPC than C= ever possibly could in PA-RISC.

@ Terrican3

There's a difference between PC-like modular arcitecture and a Windows x86 PC.

You could argue that the Amiga has always been modular due to Zorro slots, video slots, expansion ports. It has never been Linux though.

True we can never say with a certain fact that the Amiga wouldn't do an Apple and go x86, but if it did then the OS would have been rewritten for x86 and not replaced with Linux some wallpaper.

@ WolftotheMoon:

More likely we would have had a completely different OS with a completely different name by now anyway.

Of course.

But you didn't add "Windows" to your x86 claim, neither did I.

Again, I didn't mention Linux, either.

"Modular" in that context refers more to hardware than software, and I believe the key concept here is from what I understand Commodore was already moving towards a CPU-agnostic architecture. That might also have included an x86 processor.

Believe it or not, I used to be one of those "Intel outside" guys back in the Amiga days.
But - luckily, I'd say - things *can* change... and it's been quite some years since I understood it was a closed minded attitude on my part, because now I'd argue that a CPU does not really an OS make, generally speaking.

I mean, I'm almost 100% sure AmigaOS could go x86 from a technical point of view, and it would (easily?) retain everything we love about it, feature-wise. In other words, going the x86 route would simply mean making AmigaOS able to run natively on that CPU family, not putting an Amiga-like skin to another OS. Just that.

This whole "never ever think about moving away from PPC" thing has been heavily harming our community, and that's just sad, IMHO.

PS: please don't misunderstand me, I do NOT consider this "Commodore Amiga Mini" as being an Amiga

I am right now working on a Aros 68k distribution. when I have the first versions out (free windows download, integrated in Aros X86 distributions) I want to concentrate on a distribution that is combining a complete Linux-distribution (propably OpenSuse) and Aros (hosted).

Similar ideas are already in development (AEROS and Broadway-X)

Exactly... so why do some folk then post year in year out that Commodore would have went the x64 route...

No one knows, not even Dave Haynie, the Amiga was synonymous for it's custom chip sets so who's to say they wouldn't have found a way to create a new CPU altogether...

It's all speculation, conjecture and opinions and the thing is we will never know what the answer may have been, so why spend decades debating it...

@ Turrican3:

For a really "modular" approach to the Amiga it is worth looking at the Siamese software/hardware combination.

The idea of connecting an existing Amiga to an Intel PC to access the PC's drives and to turn the PC into a RTG card was very interesting. There we also plans to use another processor IIRC.

I only had the software-only version, but it was facinating to see my A1200 display a 1024x768 16bit Workbench on my old Pentium 1 Packard Bell.

The next step I believe was to replace the whole Amiga with a PCI card to fit inside the PC and I can easily image that after that someone would have been looking at the AmigaOS running natively (perhaps along the lines of AmigaXL or Amithlon).

Yes, it is a disadvantage to ONLY be able to run Windows. I have multiple os in one of my computers.

The question many ask is: Is the new Commodore Amiga an Amiga?

In the mid-60's made Ford a car called the Mustang, it was a real Ford Mustang! The crowds paid tribute to and honors the car!

In the middle of the 2000s, Ford produced a car called Mustang.
Is it a real Mustang?

Perhaps in the end is about a matter of taste!?
