Internet News   Internet News : Commodore Amiga Mini Pre Order Has Begun
posted by damocles on 21-Mar-2012 4:52:07 (44564 reads)
After 20 years since the last Commodore Amiga was released, the first new Commodore Amiga will be released by mid May, and this time in a Mini case. It comes with two options, barebones and fully loaded with i7 2600K [3.5GHz Quadcore] + nVidia 430 (with it's own discreet 1GB of RAM).

Full details can be found at CommodoreUSA.

Not true it was mentioned by others before zerohero had even posted in this thread. Those posts were removed because they were off topic

But now when he removed it (instead of just reporting it as off topic abuse) there is no proof how why and in which context AmigaOS 4 was mentioned, if at all.

And even OS4 was mentioned, ZeroHero asked rethoric question of why flamming CUSA is good and flamming Hyperion was bad. Prophets of Delphi and users answered "because CUSA was born from flamming and trolling this community with no related product".

If AmigaOS 4 was off topic in this topic, a question is the whole topic off topic to AW.net was raised by many users, incl. me.

Back on topic, where has the $500 gone? Why was it there at first place?
Its a silent proof of 20% taxation for extra extra profit.

Normal OEM margin is 3-4 to max 10-15% profit. Think about it.

So much of me, happy discussion and good night gentleman!

Why don't you ask Barry?

Because I don`t intent to register at fake Commodore and fake Amiga forum
and have not will to communicate with the Baron after his dear e-mail I can`t quote here due to TOS, but you can see in description of "Know how lame CUSA is video" on You Tube. Anyway he showed his profit margin here, but I am glad people aren`t that stupid at all.

Also, how is it possible to have first new Commodore Amiga in 20 years if CD32 was out in 1993?

i highly recommend the site management consider well the reaction of its members -- time and again -- to these guys and their 'news' items and threads. the previous policy made sense. i'd suggest sticking to it.

The policy was to move the forum threads off the front page not news. Tho I do think you are correct. They should look at the reaction of the 10-15 members who seem to lose all traces of sanity every time CUSA is mentioned.

What, mislead people into thinking it is something else? I don't think so. There are plenty of people asking question about what CommodoreOS is because it isn't exactly spelt out to them, which is a deliberate act in order to try and "add value" to the product. A value that isn't there.

Commodore OS Vision is our customized GNU/Linux distribution for Commodore enthusiasts that is designed to unleash your creative potential and help you enjoy your computing experience to the fullest. Commodore computers were well known for their unique operating environments, so we seek to do the same, by providing a distinctive, attractive, advanced and fun operating system experience. Various themes are included, inspired by the Commodore 64 and various versions of the Commodore Amiga Workbench user environments, but with a modern spin, which includes many slick graphical effects which showcase the capabilities of our new Commodore machines.

Commodore OS Vision is not a derivative of the original AmigaOS developed for 68K microprocessor computers in the 1980's, but an entirely modern operating system based on GNU/Linux. If you are interested in running a derivative of the original AmigaOS you may consider the following projects: AmigaOS4 by Hyperion Entertainment B.V., which runs on PPC products such as Acube's SAM and Aeon's X1000 computer; AROS a free open source implementation by Team AROS, which runs on x86 architecture (like Commodore USA's); MorphOS, a commercial implementation by MorphOS Team, which runs on PPC architecture such as assorted PPC Apple Macintosh models. Commodore USA, LLC has no affiliation with any of these projects, companies or products.

Don't bring such stuff into this. This is about his role as an amigaworld.net moderator, not about his programs.

No, this thread isn't about his role as an AW moderator! Read the title again. This is about Commodore Amiga Mini Pre Order Has Begun

You all have read the TOS, haven't you? If not, then get on it!

Sorry in this case I must defend Zerohero. I myself am certainly not a AOS fan and because of that I had some arguments with Zerohero. He IS a AOS supporter, to say not is really silly. Just read his comments on the threads. I do not share his tolerance regarding this "Branding" company in this case, but to say he is no OS4 supporter is misjudgement.

to selling overprized hardware is not connected to any platform. We should not start to make it to a "PPC versus X86" case. It is just misuse of a brand name (even if it is legal)

sould probably let you know, my mother (im visiting my parents) just called me up since she found an announcement of a "cult commodore amiga" on some major polish net portal. i briefly explained to her that it is just an expensive pc setup branded "amiga" which likely doesnt even exists for real yet. well, cusa kind of approach shows some effect though, same as it was with the breadbox remake.

yes of course has the brand name still some recognition in europe. But the people are not as stupid as Barry hopes. Most have good knowledge how prices are and noone will buy this expensive PC (without any innovations). You can only sell when you have a brand name AND a product that is fitting to the brand, they have only the brand name.

@olaf: correct. i think it has a great "whoaa!??!" effect with people who barely heard of these brands but never got involved with the products. the actual commercial outcome may be not that greaat.

Is COS V what was originally being called COS2?
Or is COS2 still on the horizon?

I was lead to believe that COS2 would be released with the Commodore Amiga and would be a totally new OS.
COSV is still a Linux variant like COS1, according to the Commodore USA website.

Cheers

I am sure there was some plan to have several versions of COS that were for different machines and needs. Like a power edition, gaming edition ect. Essentially a mirror of what microsoft does with Windows. Except with a free system.

I am also sure that COS 2 was supposed to be a complete new system developed by commodore using free BSD. But that plan seems to have either stalled or completely died.

Why would you want to do that? And with Windows XP! At least get 7 it boots faster and switches off faster, win win!

XP is more compatible.

I agree. In fact the world is moving away from desktops and the future is on mobile devices.

The original Commodore was founded by Jack Tramiel who left company before it acquired Amiga.

you have got to come up with a better argument than that. What's JT got to do with it? Following your line of thought the original Ford was the Model T etc...

>>XP is more compatible

Compatible to what, the old stuff, sure. But you can run old stuff in compatibility mode and if that doesn't work use a Virtual installation of XP in 7, problem solved. No really Win 7 is better, I thought XP was good but 7 is better. Vista was rubbish, I call it the Windows ME of the 21st century!

I love this, pure comedy:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

COMMODORE USA MAKES IT RIGHT; LOWERS PRICES IMMEDIATELY AFTER MASSIVE CONSUMER OUTCRY.

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL. March 22, 2012 – Commodore USA, LLC announced today the revision of the introductory price of its latest offering, the AMIGA mini, as well as the addition of configuration options, allowing for the selection of both CPU and memory.

Due to an overwhelming outpouring of customer comments, along with those posted on the major tech blogs, the company has listened to the thousands of requests for both lower prices and more choices, and responded today with prices and options that most respondents indicated was in line with other current offerings.

CEO Barry Altman states “Although we were ecstatic over the enormous traffic and positive interest generated by our recent product launch, we were equally dismayed and disheartened by the negativity regarding our initial pricing. In retrospect, we agree, and sincerely acknowledge our mistake, and hope you will take a second look at our new options and pricing. For all those customers who purchased the new AMIGA mini since yesterday’s launch, we have already reimbursed their credit card account reflecting the price difference. We would also like to thank all our supporters for their patience, as we attempt to revive the legendary Commodore and AMIGA brands”.

Imagine Dell doing that with their Alienware brand, or Asus...or Apple...

What a gem! I love it!
