Announcement   Announcement : Project: TIMBERWOLF - Bounty for already in progress AmigaOS 4.1 port of Firefox
   posted by Cyborg on 29-Sep-2009 15:53:08 (63328 reads)
Project Timberwolf

Finally the port of one of the most wanted software for
AmigaOS 4.1 has been tackled! The well known AmigaOS developers
Hans-Joerg Frieden and Thomas Frieden work already since
quite some time on a fully AmigaOS native port of Mozillas'
Firefox webbrowser!

Because of the unrealistic terms and conditions of the AmiZilla
bounty, it was decided to start a new bounty only for AmigaOS 4.1
and beyond. Thus this bounty is in no way related to AmiZilla.

Timberwolf is the project name of the AmigaOS port of the Firefox web
browser (for legal reasons it cannot be called Firefox). Firefox is an
award-winning open source web browser and is the de-facto-standard
browser across a wide variety of operating system, taking second place
in popularity after Microsoft' s Internet Explorer. Its features include
tabbed browsing, support for HTML 5, ECMAScript 3.1, and CSS 3,
extensibility through addons, and a lot more. In short, Firefox is the
most complete open source browser to date.

Read all about it on AmigaBounty.net Project: TIMBERWOLF

@Tomazkid

Firefox doesn't crawl on any of my X86 setups. It is a bit slow to startup on my (single core) 1500mhz laptop but runs without a problem after startup.
And even if it would be a bit slow now it will be a very important piece of software to have for the future HW we (might?) get.

Perhaps the team can make a statement as to whether they plan on making available to other Amiga flavours, ie, Aros, MorphOS and 68k if possible.

Read the full bounty description on the web page, this is addressed there.

@Troels

I really don't know where is the speed problem on Firefox, on my Pentium III 800 with Windows XP it works perfectly, it start in 2 or 3 second at first double click and then its ok

I don't think so as Frieden brothers are pro-OS4 only guys. Unless they screw it in purpose, OS4emu will probably be able to start it.

As for aros? Most likely never

I didn't knew that OS4Emu emulates OS4.1 as well...

@Samo
I don't think there will be any speed problem, it was tomazkid that was worried. His setup must be configured really bad or tons of other stuff must be eating up RAM?

@Rogue

btw, as i read on amigabounty: "At this point in time, Timberwolf can actually start and open a window on an AmigaOS 4.1 machine. It will display the initial GUI and try to open the "firstrun" webpage on mozilla.org"

so the question: how fast in runs in the current state (i.e. right now). 2-3 second ? 5 ? 10 ? more ?

Which version of Firefox will be ported? We already know that 3.5 is fast but 3.6 is faster still.

Could the Amizilla bounty be switched to this one?
It's a big bounty, and it was made for Firefox... so!

I wish all the best to the brothers with the browser. Its always nice to have some other browser next to OWB :) And to hear this is not the Hyperion secret thing makes it even more interesting ;)

EDIT: Maybe Justin TImber'lake can make a jingle for it ;)

Actually, no. This has nothing to do with Hyperion and the "most ambitious project".

I kind of hoped you'd say that.

Daoes this mean OWB will stop being developped ? If no, too bad since I don't really see the point developping once again another browser.

OWB is quite mature and only lacks some OS4 specific things and i think Joerg has worked very hard on is port.

NetSurf is going the right way with the 3.0 Beta version Chris released.

So I may ask : will these projects merge to become one (I don't think so since OWB depends on WebKit) or will we have 3 browsers for AmigaOS 4.1 ?

Of course, having the choice is important but having more different programs is much more important in my opinion.

Nonetheless, very good work indeed

Am beginning to understand why the twin german rascals complained about OWB features when we had dinner in Bernkastel this summer

You go, guys! This is awesome!

Ohhh no! Another announcement!

And after 12 months, a lot of people is complaining (me too), why the software is still unfinished.

Please, please, stop making announcements. I had enough...

Sorry guys, but the world of Amiga is still the same as it was in the past few years.

I hope, you show me the opposite.
