Hardware News   Hardware News : Commodore USA's Final Challenge to the Community
posted by BigBentheAussie on 19-Dec-2011 19:44:52 (69392 reads)
Commodore USA has a final challenge for this community that could enable them to have a new Commodore AMIGA with absolutely any of the features they want. We are serious about this, and we hope you will also take this offer seriously too, and contribute positively to the fruition of the Commodore AMIGA dream.

Allow me to outline our final challenge to the community, and how we can work together towards a unifying goal.
I have a list of obligations for the parties.

1. The community must definitively decide, through polls or whatever, what exactly it wants a Commodore AMIGA from Commodore USA to be.
2. Commodore USA will build and/or sell all product/s that will bear the official Commodore AMIGA brand.
3. Commodore USA will sell the first batch of a particular product AT (THEIR) COST to pre-paid customers only.
4. A minimum of 500 customers must pre-pay the entire amount in an independent account at a trusted institution (at the community's discretion) for the project to begin.
5. Commodore USA will negotiate for all required technology, be it software or hardware, and such costs will be divided by the amount of customers in the initial batch. So the more that join in, the lower the overall cost.
6. Commodore USA will outline all the costs, in as much detail as they are able to, before any customers make payment.
7. Commodore USA is ONLY paid on completion of the work to the satisfaction of the 500+ first batch customers, when the final product is ready to ship.
8. On project commencement, Commodore USA will provide monthly project updates until completion.
9. If Commodore USA does not perform the required work in 6 months of the project commencement date, then the 500+ customers have the option to withdraw immediately for a full refund of their prepayment.
10. Commodore USA reserve the right to affix a margin, at their discretion, to future sales of the product/s, past the initial batch.
11. The community will nominate two independent representatives or leaders who will liaise more closely with Commodore USA and report back to the community.
12. Sometimes negotiations require an NDA, that would limit public consumption of exact costs. In such circumstances that an NDA is required, the two nominated representatives of the community, who will also be under NDA, can independently verify such costs.
13. There will be no advertising of the product or its components by Commodore USA until project commencement.
14. In the meantime, Commodore USA will potentially continue with its current x86 based Commodore AMIGA plans, that will co-exist with the community's desired Commodore AMIGA branded product/s.

Warmest Regards,
Leo Nigro

C=USA's offer is nice offering to the Amiga Community on projects that have on people's wish list for years that have not come to be nor likely to come to be. Here is a chance for the Community to pull together and get something done with someone else taking a financial risk,

There is no offer, CUSA are bringing nothing to the table and they seem to expect the community to come up with the product and take the financial risk. Why does CUSA even need to be part of the equation?

If I opened a shop and asked passers by what they would like to buy from me as long as they paid in advance, how long do think I'd be able keep paying the rent?

Are you really can't see that Trevor and Barry "a bit" different persons, and comparing a-eon with cusa its "a bit" different ? Not that i mean there anti-cusa or aos4-fanboism, but Trevor are nice man, friendly, he write articles for amiga mags back in past, he afeqaute, he really want help in som way. While barry ..

No, I have never seen Trevor lose his cool in an online forum. Yes, I have seen Barry lose his cool in an online forum. That doesn't make Barry a terrible person. We've seen plenty of people in Amiga-related companies lose their cool in online forums over the years with some of them still held in high regard by the Kommunity. I'd bet you hold Jack Tramiel? He was known for really blowing up and I don't mean online. What about Steve Jobs? Same thing.

Quote:
Where you get your hopes, that persons like barry can do anything positive and intersting for all of us ? Did you will ever work with anyone, who do and talk the same as barry in last year ?

Will CUSA do anything that us retro fans want? That is yet to be seen, but it appears they are making an effort. I have never worked with/for Barry. He happens to be local to me. Barry invited three of us who are local, myself, Dammy and cybereye, to see behind the scenes. This was during a period of time where just about everyone, myself included early on, assumed it was just another iWin. Barry was a gentleman and indeed showed us pretty much everything that was in place or planned. Most of what he said came true, like Disney, Tron etc.

Quote:
I really can't follow logic what the reassons of any polls when cusa involved. Just talking one more time "what is amiga and what i want" ? What is sense of this ?

CUSA is head by someone who has a long history with successful businesses and deep pockets. Why not entertain the idea if there is nothing to lose? Some people are acting like they would lose their soul to talk to Barry or Leo. I'd like to see all camps work together. That will probably never happen for obvious reasons. Instead, why not think of something you would like? Maybe a replica A1000 case and keyboard? Maybe a cost effective PPC accelerator for classic Amigas? Getting to 500 could be hard, but maybe a retro case is doable.

@kas1e:

What you, my dear Russian comrade, fail to see is the point of my message which is probably my fault. All this hate, this "us-against-them" in the Amiga realm is so discouraging and unnerving. And, it's not productive.

Personally, I've always wanted an AOS 4 machine but I was never (and never will be) able to afford one. So I went the hardware-wise cheap way, got myself MorphOS and happen to like it a lot since it exactly meets my present needs. (Another reason why I can't understand the Gigahertz race - do we really need 800 hp when 150 hp are completely satisfactory?OK, if I had the choice I would not take 35 hp either.)

I really would like someone to come up with a "Great unifying theory of Amiga" for all those little kingdoms prove to be just obstacles.

All this hostility, bitterness and sarcasm is all too understandable. People have been screwed over by false hopes, broken promises and burnt money. They have a reason to react, taking CUSA's behaviour and attitude towards the community in the past into additional account.

Now that I made my choice, CUSA can come up with whatever they want. My money on my hobby is spent. Too late. Too bad.

@redrumloa

I am not gonna be dragged into a debate of CUSA vs Aeon. I don't care for neither of them, after all. However there is a big difference between a project solely driven by full pre-paid funds, even at its startup, without *any* whatsoever financial risk for a company (and while its expenses are charged/ covered from the community for 6 months) and a project that requests partial prepayment at the last revisions of its prototype phase and while OS porting has already started. You will need, of course, at least a few working brain cells to understand the difference :D

Actually, with MPC5121e A1200 accelerator card should be doable, taking into account how jens is capable to solder stuff on the A1200 bus... (voa using FPGA glue)

Turning the subject around from CUSA to the X1000, whose usual tactic is that?

It's so sad watching you become a clone of Dammy.

B.T.W.

A-EON did come up with the product, they did take the financial risk and Trevor already admitted that he will make no money from the X1000.

@BigBenAussie

Genuine suggestion amongst the rabble:

No-one has suggested this yet, everyone is purely talking about what hardware they could bring to the table.

What if Commodore USA decided to bring new software to the two major Amiga platforms?

Without scouring the internet for solid examples, it is legal in some instances to charge for Open Source software. So IF this included OpenOffice as a wild example - I think every AmigaOS and MorphOS would buy it in a heartbeat.

Is that an area you could explore?

most licenses allow for commercializing products based on FOSS; it just depends. i'd love to see an updated office suite for OS4 that supports recent file formats.

and, yes, i'd pay for it, even if it was a FOSS port, depending on the quality.

You seriously - honestly believe that a poll will build together the perfect ideas for a new Amiga and that then CUSA will build that in 6 months?

In what reality?

They cannot build a new OS - they cannot build new hardware - they don't even have the right to control the OS - I mean... what?

I don't know....

Atleast I'm trying something instead of bickering like some others.....

Perhaps CUSA (I give them the benefit of the doubt) could negotiate between companies, at the very least thet could perhaps bring us a (for example) new case resembeling the A1200 with a SAM inside, or get someone to code some app that could be bundled with OS4. or negotiate a port to a very cheap PPC board to use in a nice settop box case and bundle it with hollywood and that AMC stuff....

Atleast we can try.

He did make an 030 and AmigaKit sold it. AFAIR it sold out rather quick. I've spoken to Jens in the past about the possibility of PPC accelerator and he wasn't interested for a number of reasons. It doesn't mean it can't be done. Jens has many, many irons in the fire, including some that have nothing to do with the retro market.

Think AmiJoe G3. It was almost done and just maybe Haynie still has his files. Just a thought.

I like the desktop cases from this picture

My suggestions ...

1) A desktop computer using the 2nd desktop case + SAM460 + AmigaOS 4.1

-or-

2) A notebook similar to MacBook Air capable of running AmigaOS or MorphOS or AROS or QNX or Linux. I do not know if such a thin notebook could be built with a PPC processor. This would give a choice of OS and could be seen an Olive branch extended to all factions.
